Space Torch

Joey Howell

"Space Torch"
60"x48", 5 lb.
Acrylic on canvas, hangs on wall

All of my work is primarily about using vivid, radiant color to create an illusion of solid, 3-
dimensional form. I am not trying to confront or challenge the viewer, but simply to add to
the beauty in the world. This is the most beneficial and healing contribution I can make as a
person. I mostly paint what I am personally drawn to. There is rarely any message in my
work, beyond “This is what creates an emotional response in me; maybe it will make a
connection with you. Then we will be connected.”

My spacescapes combine intense spectral color and a loose, fluid style.
Objects in the cosmos are an important source of inspiration for me. I love astronomy and
cosmology and am knocked out by images from the Hubble, Spitzer and GALEX Space
Telescopes. I strive to introduce some level of abstraction and intensification into my
artwork, to enhance the sense of space and create a feeling of aliveness. I want to convey
my belief that these objects are the living, evolving organisms of our universe. The splash
paintings are abstract, but rely on a technical approach that parallels the forces sculpting
our cosmos.
