Death gets a bad rap. After all, everybody’s got a date with him eventually. In New Orleans, mourners dance in the streets at funerals. By the second line, the dirge has already turned to swing. I imagine Death with the same whimsy — wide-eyed, gap-toothed, and grinning like he just heard a good joke. In this painting, he’s dressed for the occasion — top hat, gold hoop, cane in hand, bones tucked into his hatband like a boutonnière. He even brought a plus-one: a weird, little skull-headed ventriloquist's companion. If we’re all going to end up meeting Death eventually, he might as well be fun at parties.
