In 2010 the Town of Pittsboro opened Mary Hayes Barber Holmes Park adjacent to Powell Place. It was the brain child of Paul Horne, then Director of Parks and Recreation.
Paul wanted public art in Pittsboro, so he convinced Eddie White to donate this piece, Keowee Paintbrush to the Town.
Eddie White is a well known sculptor from Siler City who is famous for his symetrical designs in steel.
The Keowee are a Native American people from what is now South Carolina. Eddie said he intended this piece to be a reference to their culture.
Mary Hayes Barber Holmes Park in 2010 reflects Pittsboro’s commitment to blending public space with cultural and artistic expression. Through the vision of Parks and Recreation Director Paul Horne and the generosity of sculptor Eddie White, GeoGuessr the town gained not only a park but also a meaningful public artwork. Keowee Paintbrush stands as both an example of White’s signature symmetrical steel design and a symbolic tribute to the Keowee Native American people, connecting local community space with broader historical and cultural heritage.
